The NHL season is a long one. Each team plays 82 regular season games. For the 16 teams that make the playoffs, they get a chance to play for a Stanley Cup. Theoretically, 2 teams could end up playing another 28 games. That's like extending the season another 33%, except it feels even longer than that because every game is hotly-contested and against a high quality team. When the playoffs start, everything essentially resets to zero. Each team has zero wins, each player has zero points.
